The Home Delivery Program helps create greater equity in food access for neighbors facing transportation barriers and health challenges. In partnership with the Foodbank’s hunger-relief network, the program delivers food directly to individuals, ensuring they have access to nutritious groceries at their doorstep. While each delivery provides essential food, volunteers know their impact goes beyond groceries. Home delivery drivers build relationships with neighbors along their routes, offering kindness, companionship and a familiar face they can count on.

For volunteers, the relationships they build are often the most rewarding part of serving. Tom, a volunteer, says the best part of volunteering is seeing the reactions and smiles on neighbors’ faces. One neighbor even told him, “I’ve missed you so much. I realize you’re one of my best friends.”

Bill has experienced similar moments, saying, “They get to know you, and when you can’t make it, they say, ‘Where were you?’”

Joan shared, “I love everybody on my route. I enjoy chatting with them.” Even challenges along the way, like carrying groceries up 10 flights of stairs when both elevators were out, become opportunities to show up for neighbors.

Sometimes, the smallest moments create the biggest memories. Joyce’s favorite delivery includes three children who jump up and down in the windows when they see her arrive, bringing joy to both the volunteers and the families they serve.

Home delivery volunteers do more than bring food to neighbors’ doors. They build connections, create friendships, and show that a caring community is always there.
