A flurry of fun swept through downtown Akron Saturday as nearly 1,000 elves participated in the Akron-Canton Regional Foodbank’s 13th annual Selfless Elf 5k. A hallmark of the Foodbank’s Holiday Campaign, the event draws runners, walkers, loyal supporters and holiday lovers for a morning of festive fun and local impact.

Race participants warmed up to lively dance tunes spun by DJ Nick Duvé inside the Foodbank’s warehouse – the perfect start to a chilly morning. Opening remarks came from Foodbank President and CEO Dan Flowers, who addressed the crowd from atop a scissor lift and played the national anthem on his electric guitar.

Santa and Mrs. Claus cheered on racers and posed for photos with eager children. The photo booth, always a crowd favorite, offered the perfect chance to show off this year’s new elf socks. Participants eagerly await the annual color reveal, with some longtime runners now owning all 13 pairs. This year’s blue-and-white striped socks did not disappoint.

The family-friendly event has become a beloved annual tradition for many families and typically features groups dressed in their favorite holiday costumes.

The best costume award was given to Claira Nelson, 5, of Cuyahoga Falls. This is her second year earning the Most Dashing award and her second year running the race. This year she was an adorable Grinch.

Because of the community’s support, the race will help the Foodbank distribute enough food for thousands of meals to its network of 630 pantries, meal sites, shelters, children and older adult programs within its eight-county service area.

“In the aftermath of the recent government shutdown and delays to SNAP benefits, we’ve seen our community respond with remarkable generosity,” said Flowers. “We are incredibly thankful for the many individuals and organizations who have rallied behind our mission during this difficult period. At the same time, we know the need will continue as families work to regain their footing. Events like Selfless Elf and our Holiday Campaign reflect the impact we can make when we all work together.”

Overall top female runner was Macy McRowe, 26, of Wadsworth who has run the race for 12 years. She’s been the first-place female runner for 11 years!

“This represents an annual tradition. I love coming out here,” she said. “It wouldn’t be the holidays without Selfless Elf. I love all the festivities. It’s such a well-organized race and brings together people that support the Foodbank, people that love running and people that just love Christmas. It’s the best of everybody in Akron.”

Overall top male runner was Andy Feltman, 23, of Akron. It was his first time participating in the race. As a social worker, he appreciates the opportunity to give back to his community.

“It means a lot to be able to do what you love and have it contribute to a good cause. Plus, it brings all of us together,” said Feltman. He was joined by his Akron Running Club friends and fellow University of Akron class graduates.

New to this year’s race was the opportunity to register as a team. The fastest team was the Akron Running Club, represented by Andy Feltman, Christian Jenkins, Jake Grdadolnik and Justin Zapotoczny.

The VIP Elf raising nearly $1,900, which will help provide the equivalent of 5,700 meals, was Valerie Murray of Hudson.
