The Akron-Canton Regional Foodbank is seeking the community’s support to help reach its 4.6 million meal goal for its annual Harvest for Hunger Campaign.

Beginning Monday, donations to the Foodbank will be doubled, up to $40,000, making donations go twice as far! At the Foodbank, $1 can help provide 4 meals, but during the Harvest for Hunger Match Challenge, April 18-22, $1 can help provide 8 meals to families facing hunger. The match challenge is made possible because of generous support from Citizens Bank, Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company, Shearer’s Foods LLC and The J.M. Smucker Co.

As inflation continues to rise, families living in poverty are forced to make difficult decisions, like choosing between nourishing groceries and paying for basic necessities, like gas, utilities and rent. With families spending more on food and gas, monthly budgets tend to be strained. The Foodbank and its network of hunger-relief programs are available to families needing help with groceries.

“The Harvest for Hunger Campaign is a critical resource for your Foodbank as we serve hungry families in our region. Because of supply chain issues and inflation costs, we’re spending more on food and transportation than ever before,” said Dan Flowers, president and CEO of the Foodbank. “By supporting the Harvest for Hunger Match Challenge, you can make double the impact for our neighbors in need.”

Harvest for Hunger is the Foodbank’s largest fundraising initiative and helps support food distribution all year long. Support from the community is imperative to ensure families struggling with hunger have a place to turn during their time of need.

This year’s goal, $1.13 million and 100,000 pounds of food, will help the Foodbank provide the equivalent of 4.6 million meals to the local community. One hundred percent of all Harvest for Hunger donations go directly to providing free food for individuals and families in the Foodbank’s eight-county service region. Donations from individuals, corporations, foundations and workplace giving campaigns all contribute to the Foodbank’s ability to lend a helping hand to neighbors facing food insecurity.
