Today is national Hunger Action Day and September is Hunger Action Month, an opportunity for you to help create awareness and take action on the issue of hunger. In the Akron-Canton Regional Foodbank’s eight-county service area, 1 in 7 individuals struggle with hunger and more than 1 in 5 children.

We can end hunger one helping at a time. With every action, we get one step closer to making hunger a thing of the past. In the month of September, we re-ignite our commitment to this mission. If we raise our voices in unison, we can influence Congress and our local governments to strengthen anti-hunger legislation and take action to fight hunger across the country. As individuals, charities, businesses and government, we all have a role to play in getting food assistance to our neighbors in need.

Ways you can support Hunger Action Month:

  • Volunteer at your Foodbank. The Foodbank is grateful for the support of its dedicated volunteer force. It’s because of their support that we helped provide 24.5 million meals for our local community in 2018. Last year, we hosted nearly 11,000 volunteers who donated more than 66,000 hours of service. We hope you’ll consider volunteering during Hunger Action Month. Click here to view available volunteer opportunities.
  • Tell the USDA to oppose the SNAP Categorical Eligibility Rule. The administration recently proposed changes that would severely restrict people’s ability to receive food through the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). This rule would impact 3 million individuals immediately and threaten the eligibility of 500,000 students to access free school meals. Click here to oppose this rule and share your thoughts with the administration. The deadline to oppose the rule is September 23, 2019.

Together, we can end hunger one helping at a time. Every action counts, so visit akroncantonfoodbank.org/HAM to learn how you can get started. Thank you for your continued support of the Akron-Canton Regional Foodbank and our hunger-relief efforts.
