The Akron-Canton Regional Foodbank recently unveiled The Timken Company’s logo on two of its large semi-trailers, signifying the local partnership between the two organizations.

The Timken Company is the Foodbank’s first transportation program sponsor. A significant supporter through the years, Timken specifically directed its 2016 gift to support the Foodbank’s transportation program. Each month, the Foodbank’s fleet of trailers logs more than 12,000 miles across an eight-county area, transporting donated food from retailers, manufacturers and farmers in the region.

“The Timken Company is constantly fostering innovative ways to build a stronger community,” said Dan Flowers, President and CEO of the Akron-Canton Regional Foodbank. “They are a proven, committed partner of the Foodbank, and we are grateful for their dedication to Northeast Ohio, and to the communities where they operate.”

This donation assists the Foodbank in continuing to provide emergency food to individuals and families struggling with hunger locally. An important element of the program is to procure food and essential grocery items that may otherwise be discarded from a variety of national, state and local sources. For example, last year, the Foodbank kept more than 8.3 million pounds of edible food from going to waste by partnering with community grocery store partners, directing what grocery shoppers leave behind on the tables to those in need.

The Foodbank will rescue food from more than 100 retail locations in Carroll, Holmes, Portage, Medina, Tuscarawas, Wayne, Summit and Stark counties, collecting expired food and then distributing it though the Foodbank’s network. On an average day, each truck in the Foodbank’s fleet dives 100 miles to rescue approximately 4,360 pounds of food.

“The Timken Company is proud to be creatively expanding our role in the fight to end hunger in the communities where our employees live and work,” said Kari L. Groh, Vice President – Communications and Public Relations. “The Foodbank’s need for capacity in its transportation program will ensure that food can reach the people who need it most, and we are honored to support that goal.”
