Feeding America Network Food Banks Across the Country Promote Hunger Action Month

This September, the Akron-Canton Regional Foodbank, along with the Feeding America nationwide network of food banks, will mobilize across all 50 states in an effort to raise awareness to bring an end to hunger.

In the 8-counties served by the Foodbank, one in seven people will struggle with hunger this year. That number includes more than one in five children who will face food insecurity.

“During Hunger Action Month, we witness our community standing together to take action for hunger-relief,” said Dan Flowers, President & CEO of the Akron-Canton Regional Foodbank. “Whether it's by advocating and raising awareness, making a donation or volunteering your time; thank you for finding a way that's right for you to make a difference during this vital month.”

Here’s how you can take action this September:

  • Volunteer at Operation Orange: Join the Foodbank for its fifth annual 24-hour volunteer event, Operation Orange, on September 8-9, 2017. Night owl volunteers are still needed! If you’re interested, please sign up at oporange.com.

  • Operation Orange T-Shirt: Stop by your Akron-Canton Regional Foodbank to pick up your Operation Orange t-shirt for a $10 donation.

  • Hunger Action Day of Service: You’re invited to assist our network partners like food pantries, hot meal sites and shelters, in completing projects at their sites. Volunteer projects will be on Friday, September 29 from 9 a.m. to noon and can accommodate up to 10 volunteers at each site. To sign up to volunteer, please contact Tasha Ledrich, Volunteer Leader at 330.777.1065.

  • Advocate: The Foodbank needs your help throughout the year as it advocates for important policy issues that impact people facing with hunger. Please visit the Foodbank’s website to sign up for action alerts, akroncantonfoodbank.org/advocate.

September marks the tenth year the Feeding America network of food banks has organized this annual call to action and the tenth year the Akron-Canton Regional Foodbank has participated in the Hunger Action Month movement. This year the campaign will focus on the strong connections between hunger and health.
